Abstract

A total of 42 competitors in boxing, football and modern pentathlon, members of first-league teams, performed at standard load maximally intense work on a cycloergometer. The reaction of each competitor to this effort was evaluated by appropriate physiological and biochemical indices. Parallel observations of the changes induced by the applied effort in the sphere of psychomotor functions and general feeling were utilized in a search for work adaptation signs interpreted as a manifestation of improved co-operation of the nervous and motor system. In the studies use was made of a set of electronic instruments of Polish make, comprising: a Reaction time meter (MRK-433), Piorkowski apparatus and Cross apparatus; moreover, a scale called Subjective evaluation of general feeling was employed. The results allowed formulation of several conclusions useful for the theory and practice of top performance sports. It was shown, among other findings, that maximal physical effort induces in the psychomotor functions of competitors a number of adaptive changes which may on a behavioural level represent psychological indices of training-induced fitness.
