Abstract

12 physically active people (VO2 max 34 ml/min/kg), in good health, 73 years old on the average, underwent a 6 week training cycle including gymnastics and controlled walking. The effort load resulted in heart rate increases up to 70 of the maximum for that age group. The training cycle did not result in significant changes of VO2 max nor double product at rest. The value of double product was lowered at maximum effort by 10 . Statistically significant increases in the metabolic rate at rest took place (by 15 ) and the minute ventilation at rest increased by 10 . Results of the investigation suggest the differentiation in direction of developing physiological adaptation caused by training of old people with a good pre-training physical efficiency measured by VO2 max.
