Abstract

In order to determine the optimum intensity of running exercise, six middle- and long-distance runners aged 19-24 years were subjected to an anaerobic threshold test. Progressive treadmill run with a velocity increased every 5 min until complete fatigue was applied. Relationships observed between responses of running velocity and blood lactate (LA) concentration served as a basis for determination of LA 4 mmol/l (AT4) and of the individual (AT) anaerobic threshold. Running velocity and LA for ATind were 15.97 +/- 1.28 km/h and 3.41 +/- 0.69 mmol/l, respectively. No significant differences in mean values of the physiological parameters measured were found between ATind and At4. In middle-distance runners ATind was equal to AT4 while in long-distance runners Atind was lower by 5.7 (1 km/h) than AT. In the next series the subjects performed 30 min run with a velocity equal to their ATind. Gradual increase of heart rate and decrease of respiratory quotient and bicarbonate concentration were found, however, the values were not significantly different from ATind. Among the physiological response studied, only oxygen uptake, oxygen pulse, and lactate concentration during 39th min of exercise were lower than ATind of the intensity of endurance exercise in running training.
