Abstract
A mail survey of the 50 states and the District of Columbia was conducted to assess the requirements for scholastic preparticipation physical examinations (PPEs). Forty-five replies were received. The results showed that 35 states require a yearly examination and 36 states provide an offical state form. Twenty-five states have a medical history questionnaire, but only three states supply a list of contraindications for participation. Several states allow examination by someone other than a physician. Only one of the forms contains a statement of the purpose and/or limitations of the PPE. The requirements and intent of the PPE differ considerably from state to state, indicating that national guidelines fo PPEs are needed. Verf.-Referat
