Abstract des Autors

The diagnosis of idiopathic osteoporosis is usually based on the recognition of osteopenia found coincidentally on radiographs or when performing a work-up on patients with typical pain syndromes, a spinal deformity, or insufficiency fractures. Less frequent causes of osteopenia are then ruled out by history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. Quantitative bone mass measurements with either quantitative computed tomography or dual-photon absorptiometry can be useful in the early diagnosis of osteopenia, in defining its severity, and in monitoring treatment response. However, reliable procedures for screening women in order to predict future fractures are not yet available. Verf.-Referat
