Abstract

Four senior kayak competitors performed two types of exercise on kayak ergometer: 1) maximal at 100 VO2 max of four min duration and 2) submaximal at about 70 VO2 max, 40 min duration. Immediately prior to warm-up, and at 2 and 30 min after exercise lactate, insulin growth hormone, cortisol, and aldesterone were determined in venous blood. Insulin tended to increase during maximal and decrease during submaximal exercise. Growth hormone increased 1,5-6 fold in the four and 10-30 fold in forty min exercise. Cortisol increased by 50 in maximal and by 30 in submaximal exercise, to remain elevated for 30 min after exercise. Aldosterone increased by 65 in maximal and almost doubled in submaximal exercise, and did not return to pre-ex after 30 min. The results point out to relatively high hormonal response to both the maximal and submaximal exercise in experienced kayak competitors. Growth hormone and aldosterone appear to be more affected by prolonged exercise. Verf.-Referat
