Abstract

Point tables used in the decathlon to convert raw results into points are compared in this paper. The comparison is made between tables from 1962 and those in force since April 1st, 1985. The paper describes the function of awarded points depending on the achieved result. The differences in the evaluation of results between awarding of points in 1962 and 1985 are established as well as differences in evaluation of improved results. As a result of the conducted analyses, it has been found that the dependence of the number of awarded points according to the new tables on the achieved raw results is almost linear. The present method of awarding points will distinguish more between better and worse decathletes. The greatest differences between awarded points with an increase in results by a value of the standard deviation have been observed in the following events: javelin throwing, pole vault and long jump, in favour of the new tables of 1985.
