Abstract

Anterior tibial pain with activity is not uncommon in athletes and has been attributed to conditions varying from periostitis due to poor stretching and muscle conditioning to exertional compartment syndromes. Tibiofibular synostosis has previously been shown to result in ankle pain and functional disability, but its relation to shin splint-like pain is unproven. It is not our intention to review the vast literature regarding shin splints, or anterior tibial pain, but rather to add an unusual and previously unproven cause, and to illustrate the functional implications of a tibiofibular synostosis. We report on a 17-year-old runner whose anterior tibial pain resolved after resection of a diaphyseal tibiofibular synostosis, allowing him to return to running. Verf.-Referat
