Abstract

This study evaluated physical and performance characteristics of 92 age-group swimmers (38 male, 54 female) and 58 non-swimming controls (28 male, 30 female) between the ages of 7-12 years. Anthropometric measures including height weight, muscle girths, and body composition, specific and general strength measures and flexibility were also compared. Swimmers were significantly taller, heavier, and had greater lean body mass than non-swimmers, with differences accentuated in the better ability swimmers. Vertical jump power was significantly greater for swimmers. Swimmers had greater shoulder abduction flexibility than non-swimmers, with female exhibiting greater ankle and trunk flexibility than males. Older and more proficient swimmers were stronger, with males superior to females in all strength measures except dominant grip. Age-group swimmers possess superior strength, body composition, and flexibility characteristics when compared to non-swimmers. Verf.-Referat
