Abstract

Out of 2,000 athletes who were examined at the Centro Medico Sportivo in Verona during a sport fitness examination, 76 subjects were found to be carriers of proteinuria, detected in the course of urine laboratory tests using sticks. In these subjects and in another 72 among normal athletes, total proteins were later evaluated in the urine collected for 24 hours. This assay showed the intermittance of such finding in the two examined groups. However, the values of these proteinurias, during the 24 hours, always remained within the range of slight proteinuria (200-600 mg/24 hours), except in one subject who was found to be affected by mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis. These data stress once again the need for repetition of a urine test that has yielded a positive proteinuria result, expecially if the first test wasnt carried out under basal conditions.
