Abstract

Fifteen male athletes (mean age 18.4 +/- 3.9 years), all competitive cyclists, were submitted to maximal upright exercise test on bicycle ergometer. Blood samples were taken before and at 4, 9, 16 minutes after the effort to determine the venous lactate level. The cyclists were likewise controlled after a loading dose of thiamine (900 mg per day) for three consecutive days. In twelve out of the fifteen also were determined the basal and recovery blood glucose levels, before and after thiamine treatment. Lactate blood levels were significantly lower after thiamine either in the rest or in the recovery period (p<0.001-p<0.01). Heart rate and glucose blood levels were also constantly and significantly reduced after the drug (p<0.001-p< 0.01). We conclude that thiamine appears to be able to rise the anaerobic threshold and therefore it is an effective physiological support for the endurance athlete. Verf.-Referat
