Abstract

Bilateral simultaneous rupture of the patellar tendon is a rare injury. Cases of bilateral patellar tendon rupture have been reported associated with systemic lupus erythematosus combined with long-term corticosteroid therapy and rheumatoid arthritis with and without corticosteroid use. Unilateral patellar tendon rupture has been associated with renal failure and local injection of corticosteroids as well as with end stage jumpers knee. Two cases of bilateral simultaneous patellar tendon rupture in patients without any apparent systemic disease have been reported previously, although in one of these cases the patient had a previous unilateral rupture of the tendo calcaneous. We report here bilateral simultaneous rupture of the patellar tendon in a young female collegiate gymnast free of systemic disease and without past history of patellar tendinitis. Verf.-Referat
