Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of various phases of training on the specific work capacity of young kayakers. Eight kayakers (17-18 years of age) were tested in the following series: the first (I) was carried out during the general preparation period, the second (II) during the specialized training, and the third (III) in the competition period. Work capacity was evaluated on the basis of total work output during the specific test on a kayak ergometer and changes in power as a function of time. Test duration was 4-min, with the resistance force range of 4-5 kp, and the individually maximal rate of paddling. Pulmonary ventilation, oxygen uptake, and heart rate were measured with the Jaeger system. Blood lactic acid concentration, and base-acid equilibrium were determined. The training program applied in the group of junior kayakers resulted in improvement of work capacity by about 19.6. This occurred through increase in aerobic capacity and better utilization of oxygen. The subjects reached the highest work capacity during the competition period. Verf.-Referat
