Abstract

Sports-active people who train hard are doomed to second-class performances if they become iron deficient. Iron deficiency, which in athletes is common with or without anemia, limits energy production and the oxygen-transporting capacity of myoglobin and iron-containing enzymes. Groups that are especially susceptible to iron deficiency include: menstruating women; dieters, especially athletes; endurance athletes; those who do not eat red meat; lactoovo vegetarians; nature-food eaters. The author gives six tips that may reduce an athletes risk of becoming iron deficient. Verf.-Referat
