Abstract

There is a great need for a valid substitute for direct measurement of VO2 max, the accepted criterion for assessing circulatory function. Two such possible substitutes, the Astrand and Sjostrand submaximal tests, were studied in 83 male subjects (mean age 47.7 years). The Astrand test had a correlation of .58 and the Sjostrand test had a correlation of .55 (p<.001) to directly measured VO2 max. The standard error was 12 and 16 for the Sjostrand and Astrand tests, respectively, with mean VO2 max of 33.0 and 32.1 ml/kg/min compared with 38.8 ml/kg/min by direct measurement. It was concluded that neither test is an adequate substitute for direct measurement of VO2 max and that great caution should be used in interpreting the results of such tests. Verf.-Referat
