Abstract

Physical exercise is both useful and necessary for the maintenance of physical fitness in middle age. However such exercise cannot wholly counteract the involuntary aging process. Thus physical exercise should be moderate and regular in order not to exceed the physiological limitations inherent in the subjects age. The results of field tests on amateur and racing cyclists are analysed in this light. The analysis showed that while organised bicycle racers on average satisfied the criteria presented above, the heart rates and lactate levels in amateurs were found to be extremely high, well above acceptable physiological limits. For very long distances in particular, analysis of the results and the length of the races leads to a recommendation that the competition be divided into serveral shorter stages. In conclusion, while cycling should be encouraged in the middle-aged, measures must be taken to ensure that amateur cyclists do not exceed suitable limits of effort and duration. Verf.-Referat
