Abstract

Effects of alteration in respiratory frequency on respiratory work was studied in two groups of athletes. The two groups differed in the level of endurance and the familiarization with the testing conditions. Results show that any kind of change in the spontaneous respiratory rhythm results in an increase in the oxygen consumption so that respiratory work increases indirectly. Karate athletes having not so much experiences in breathing technique as compared to subjects in group one showed, however, no significant difference in oxygen uptake. This negligible difference should presumably fail to remain upon exercise. Effectiveness of breathing VE/V02 was highest (as it was expected) when respiratory frequency was held at low level.
