Abstract

In summary the isokinetic training can give: maximal resistance through the whole range of motion, training at various velocities with specific effects of the contraction speed, agonist and antagonist training in series, less risk for overload and also possibility for nonrestive antagonist movement if wanted (in contrast to weight training where measures must be taken to avoid high load eccentric work). Isokinetic training can specially be used in painfree patients with acceptable range of motion and where efficient strength training is wanted through the whole range of motion. Using visual feedback training with submaximal load can also be performed. It cannot substitute training in functional activities, which is necessary not at least for motor learning, strength and endurance training of essential motor groups for that particular activity.
