Abstract des Autors

The results of this study suggest that distance runners have a greater than expected frequency of latent iron deficiency. Female distance runners have an inadequate dietary intake of iron, and male distance runners may experience some hemolytic process as reflected by reduced haptoglobin levels. The presence of latent iron deficiency without anemia may reduce physical work capacity and impair racing performance. Latent iron deficiency may be caused by inadequate dietary intake, reduced absorption capacity, and increased loss of iron by increased sweat production, hemolysis, and hemoglobinuria. Clinical application of this information for distance runners should include dietary evaluation to ensure adequate iron intake and routine monitoring of serum ferritin and hemoglobin levels. If iron deficiency anemia or latent iron deficiency is found and other causes of blood loss are ruled out, supplemental oral iron and/or nutritional counseling should be initiated. Serum ferritin and hemoglobin levels should be followed periodically. Verf.-Referat
