Abstract

Most of the progress in exercise and sports physiology made over the last decades originates from human work. Man has been not only the subject but alsothe object for a large number of experimental studies. The obvious advantage is the greater reliability of the results which in turn derives from the more sophisticated technology. Only few scientific international communities have been active over the past 50 years in sports physiology. Among these, several italian groups have made important contributions. Starting with Angelo Mosso and subsequently through Margaria and his coworkers and through the work of several newly established scientific institutions, italian physiologists have been particularly active in research in exercise sciences. The present report deals mainly with these contributions that for convenience appear in five sections: a) exercise bioenergetics, b) exercise biochemistry, c) methods and techniques, d) exercise physiology, e) sports physiology.
