Abstract

Studies of 50 competitive distance runners revealed that, as a group, they have optimal levels of body fat and blood lipids, but that a substantial percentage of them have elevated blood pressure body fat, and serum cholesterol and low level of HDL cholesterol, because they were eating the standard American diet. Our experience over many years indicates that changing the dietto one that is lower in fat, cholesterol, protein, salt, and calories results in optimal levels of blood pressure, blood lipids, and body fat. By doing thisthe highly conditioned distance runner becomes an excellent model of optimal health and fitness. Verf.-Referat
