Abstract

Fourteen volunteer subjects were examined mainly on respiratory responses during the Karate activities. The records were obtained from terminals placed onthe chest and abdominal walls by means of an impedance pneumograph. By mere posing, respiratory patterns changed significanty, showing smaller amplitudes and faster frequencies. After this, the recovery pattern was obtained. By 2min repetitive reverse punches, pulmonary ventilation increased in two phases. The extent of the increase was greater in the expert performers. When blockingthe attack, the inspiratory breathing was arrested transiently. The punch was normally finished at the midway in the expiratory phase. The respiratory quotients tended to reach toward larger values after 2-min punches were finished. These results indicated the characteristic changes in respiratory responses before, during and after the Karate activities. Verf.-Referat
