Abstract des Autors

Harold Chapson resumed competition as a masters middle-distance runner at age 70, the average life expectancy of American men. Within a short time he established world records at distances from 800 to 10,000 meters. He was tested at 71.7 years of age and found to have excellent health, exceptionally high cardiorespiratory fitness, and low body fat. Chapsons V02 max of 57.3 ml/kg/min was higher than predicted for his age and percent body fat, and 43 to 100 higher than reported for other masters endurance runners over the age of 70. It appears that Chapsons genetic endowment and trainability for aerobic performance persisted into old age, even though he was physically inactive for 44years. Verf.-Referat
