Abstract

The gait patterns of 6 chidren with syndrome were evaluated to provide objective data relative to normal parameters, as a basis for comparison and therapeutic management. Two complete walking cycles were filmed simultaneously in the frontal and sagittal planes, and the temporal components of the stance and swing phases were recorded in addition to the amplitudes of upper and lower limb segments. Greater than normal variation in individual patterns of walking was evident. Examination of the sagittal rotation of the ankle joint indicated immature development resulting in poor heel-toe mechanismus during the stance phase and exaggerated abduction of the lower limb to facilitate foot clearance. Immaturity was further evidenced by consistent out-toeing which varied in amplitude bilaterally. Upper limb excursions were highly variable, but the maintenance of the wrist in flexion throughout the cycle was characteristic of the group. Intragroup comparisons revealed consistent immaturity in the movement patterns of distal segments suggesting severely retarded or arrested development of the neural control of peripheral movements. Variations in the development of proximal movement patterns may indicate differences in neutral development or the effectiveness of early motor experience. Verf.-Referat
