Abstract
The medical tibial syndrome is a frequent compartment syndrome which particularly afflicts long-distance runners. It consists of a pain on the medial aspect of the leg at the middle and distal thirds in correspondence with the postero-medial border of the tibia. Its exact localization is readily identified by pressure and palpation. Its cause is an increase in intrafascial pressure in the deep flexor muscle compartment, due to hypertrophy of these muscles. Rest, followed by resumption of activity at a more moderate levelis sometimes enough to solve the problem. Surgery, consisting of medial fasciotomy, in correspondence with the area of pain, is necessary in some cases and this resolves the situation definitively. Verf.-Referat
