Abstract

Five cases of isolated tear fracture of the apophyseal nucleus of the anteroinferior iliac spine were found in a search through radiographs of sports injuries to the pelvis collected over a period of fifteen years at the CONI Sports Medicine Department. The view is therefore expressed that the label very unusual traumatic event attached to this injury is not entirely correct,being determined by the current paucity of accurate clinical and statistical information. The five cases are presented in detail, particular attention being directed to the action on the part of the athlete that led to the onset of the typical symptoms. Diagnosis is facilitated by the concurrence of certain features, such as the youth of the subject, the practice of sport, expecially football, and the presence of pain in the anterolateral region of the root of the thigh. These features lead to radiograpical examination, itself anindispensable prelude to the finaldiagnosis. The prognosis, treatment and prevention of this form of sports injury are also discussed.
