Abstract des Autors

A case study of cardiorespiratory fitness was conducted over the course of four years covering two normal pregnancies. Direct measurements of maximal oxygen uptake were made during and after lactation. The maximal uptake in creased as the weekly mileage of a jogging program increased. Uptake then pla teaued despite a further increase in mileage. In the second pregnancy, stress testing was halted at about 90 of maximal oxygen uptake and, by extrapolatingthe rate - oxygen uptake curve, the true maximum was estimated. Both weekly mileage and the estimated maximal uptake fell in the first trimester from values before pregnancy, but over the course of pregnancy the estimated maximal oxygen uptake increased 10. Parturition had no apparent effect on maximal uptake. The findings indicate that during normal pregnancy and lactation, maximal oxygen uptake and endurance performance can be improved by physical training without harmfuleffects on the mother or child.
