Abstract

The physiological premises underlying currently employed functional respiratory tests in the evaluation of pilots and athletes are presented. The conceptual and practical reasons for the choice of methods and of general and specific evaluation criteria are discussed. Some of the results obtained in more than twenty years experience involving spirographic and gas analytic examinations, tests of muscular work of various types and degrees, and hypoxia tests are reported and analysed. These cover statistically valid groups of student pilots or persons being graded for athletic activities or regular physical education courses involving limited groups or individual athletes of particular levels in whom studies were also extended to specific sporting aptitude.
