Abstract

The literature on detachment of the apophysical nucleus of the ischial tuberosity masks its frequency by speaking of it in different nosographical terms. It is caused by a tractive force applied by muscles inserted in the tuber and acting in abnormal directions. Twelve cases at the Rome Sports Medicine Centreare described, together with the radiological findings and the history of the accident that caused the injury. Personal views on the classification of this form, its mechanism and the symptom picture noted in complete and incomplete detachment are presented. Diagnosis is based on the presence of four factors: youth, practice of sport (usually football, athletics, fencing, figure or ice skating), onset of pain in the gluteal fold or the inner, posterior adductorial surface of the thigh as a result of extending a limb with the hip bent and the knee extended. Acute muscle pains must be differentiated. The clinicalfeatures must be correctly observed and radiological examination of the pelvisis required. The injury is common. It can be prevented by exercise involving gradual extension of the muscles inserted on the ischial tuberosity. Verf.-Referat
