Abstract

Specific alterations were observed in structural proteins of rat skeletal muscles in response to free wheel-running and weight lifting exercises for a period of six weeks. Rectus femoris, vastus medialis and soleus, which represented the mainly white, red and intermediate fiber types respectively, showed increments in the concentration of sarcoplasmic proteins (SP) due to running and in myofibrillar proteins (MP) after weight lifting exercise. All three muscles, despite a different fibver type composition, indicated a similar pattern of change in soluble proteins, which augments the hypothesis that the adaptions in skeletal muscles due to endurance and strengthening exercises may be specific to the type of stress.
