Abstract

The incidence of Flag-Football injuries on synthetic turf and natural grass served as the focal for this investigation. Intramural Football was selected for study because it represents a non-contact sport that attracts one-half million college-age participants annually. As expected, the rate of serious injuries was much lower than those reported for Tackle Football. The synthetic surface, however, was associated with a significantly greater proportion of minor injuries. It was concluded that protection of the knee and elbow would eliminate nearly one-half of all Flag-football injuries since abrasions to these areas of the body accounted for a large portion of total injuries.
